Recently I had the pleasure of attending the Cincinnati Bridal Showcase at the Sharonville Convention Center.

Bridal show are always so fun for you as the bride to get a chance to talk to the vendor, try some great food, get do-able ideas, and grab some information from vendors. But what you don’t know is that it’s just as much fun for the vendors. We catch up, look at each others work, chat about the brides we have in common, and get to know each other better.

Well this time I happened to be chatting with the SUPER AWESOME Brenda Pottinger of Pottinger Photography! She is such an awesome person and she is so loved by all of the vendors! And her bridal show booth is so super cool and inventive! So anyways, I happened to browsing her FABU albums when I ran across these beauties!

Aren’t they beautiful! I just had to find them…. but to no avail! So I found something kind of close…. What do you think about these?

Postage Rates Raising in 2012!

We all know that paper invitations aren’t going anywhere!

Here’s a little cheat sheet about the new pricing and what it’s most likely going to cost you when make your stop at the post office.

Now is a good time to stock up on those Forever stamps! And remember if you are sending out invitations with reply envelopes you expect to receive after January 22nd to put an extra penny stamp on them to ensure delivery back to you.

Here’s a quick guide to 2012 USPS rates as they apply to most wedding invitations:

Save the date, Reply Envelope (with single reply card inside), Single card/invitation: 45 cents
Invitation set (invitation, reply card, reply envelope, and another card or two, up to 2 oz.): 65 cents
Response postcard: 32 cents

Keep in mind: square envelopes/postcards, non-bendable envelopes, and extra thick envelopes don’t fit through the USPS machines, so there is an additional fee for being non-machinable.

It’s time…. I would have loved to post this earlier today but work and appointments got in the way. So I’m posting now… hoping all of you awesome readers will still click over to the blog tonight!

One of the greatest parts about this Vendor’s Uncorked series is not only that I get to introduce to you great vendors… but… you also get to meet some of the coolest, awesomest people I know! Yes, I just made up the word awesomest!

Today is no exception. Meet Jacalyn… btw… I don’t think there’s a single person that’s met her that doesn’t love her…

She just exudes cool, classy, and dramatic…. you know like if you looked up the definition of jazz hands in the dictionary… you might just find this picture! lol!

Jacalyn is the owner of JMM Photography and one of Cincinnati’s top photographers. She is fantabulous at what she does and honestly…. it’s because she loves what she does so freakin’ much!

· Hi Kellie! Here is my snippet on the “Vendors Uncorked” Love the idea behind this Kell and am so honored you asked me to partake!

o Let's try this.... start here.
* What is your job/business?

o I am Jacalyn Mains- sole owner of JMM Photography. I am a wedding and boudoir photographer. What I am not is a photographer that will jump at the chance to photograph absolutely anything. I’d rather be excellent at one thing than mediocre at many. I find that I am inspired by the energy surrounding a wedding as well as the essence of a woman celebrating her beauty and thrive on woman power- so I’ve chosen to hone my skills and focus on those two types of photography, wedding and boudoir, because they stimulate my creative juices and keep my job fun! I have a studio/consult space in Newport, KY that I share with four other wedding vendors (all women and all pure awesome.)

* What drives you to do what you do every day?

o When I first got into photography and decided to turn it into a career instead of a side gig, I said one thing to myself that remains true today. If I am going to be away from my family, my children, and the ones I love most by working, then it will only be at a “job” that I love, plain and simple. It isn’t worth it to be absent from what matters most to me to do something that I hate. So, for me, that is photography. I know not everybody has that luxury and I thank my lucky stars every day that I do. I am an artist- you know, one of those creative types that marches to the beat of their own drum. I am proud of that and think that that is what makes me a unique person and unique artist. The only way to be fulfilled in my life, as a person who positively contributes as a member of society, is to express my creative nature through the lens. It is what makes sense to me, it is how I see the world, it is how I capture others.

o
* What is a common misunderstanding from couples in your line of work?

o I think that many potential clients don’t realize that when we are meeting, I am interviewing them as much as they are interviewing me. I don’t want to work with just anybody. For the wedding day to be “the perfect storm” our personalities need to mesh and our thoughts on the day need to be in sync. For example, if you are a super control freak bride who wants to dictate my every move- you are absolutely not the bride for me. I want to be trusted in the craft that I do. I need that trust and I work hard to earn it. I tell my clients that I am with them all day and, in fact, I usually see the bride more so than she’ll see her own fiancé on her wedding day. It sounds crazy, but it is true! So, we need to get along and, in my eyes, we need to be friends. I am looking for clients that I simply click with and know that in the end, our relationship will extend beyond their wedding day. Some people think this is strictly business, but for me, it isn’t. It’s personal.

o
* What is a common complaint you hear from couples about something that you do… and what is the reason why you do it this way?

o Ok Kell- I really don’t have a response for this one. I’m not saying I’ve NEVER gotten a complaint, but when I have, it is something specific to the couple and not to my work (not tooting my own horn here, but just stating the facts). If I had had a reoccurring complaint, then I would have changed the way I did said offense.

o
* What are some of the things you do that contribute to your bottom line?

o Lenses to me are like- I don’t know, say shoes, to the average woman! You simply can’t have too many!!! I believe having a variety of lenses to choose from helps keep the way I shoot fresh and ever evolving. But the list goes on and I’m only going to mention a few things here as I don’t want to bore you but…..I attend a photography conference once a year to keep apprise to new products and to further educate myself. Not to mention the hard cost of the albums I offer! I want the best and have expensive taste- what can I say? I work hard to present my clients with albums that they maybe have never seen before, or that has a unique quality to it. It is something I am attracted to and feel that my idea client is as well. Oh, and I gotta give some love to Rachel, my assistant and second photographer. I have to pay her too! She works hard!

* What are some little known facts about your particular industry that brides really should know?

o Despite what you may think, a lot of the photographers in this industry (especially the woman) are friends! I meet with 3 other female photographers once a month for breakfast or lunch and we talk shop (and about our personal lives too). We might be in direct competition with each other, but that totally doesn’t matter. All four of us realize that there are enough brides to go around and that not every bride is for me! I love knowing other ladies in the industry well enough on a personal and professional level to be able to confidently refer them to brides that have contacted me and their date is already booked.

o
* If you lived in a perfect world… engaged couples would…. __________________________?

o Absolutely, completely, and blindly trust and have faith in me. Simply put- just let me do my job. I know that seems like a lot to ask when there are people out there who aren’t trustworthy. However, know that there are good people out there, good vendors who have a lot invested in their integrity and in the relationships they build with their clients. My very favorite thing to hear from my clients is, “Jacalyn, just do what you do!” Then I am like, “Hell yeah! It is on!”

I remember one of the very first weddings I assisted with another local wedding planner.

The tables were filled with tons of beautiful produce, greens, and flowers. It was stunning to say the least.

The night ended and the florist returned to take down the glass and clear off the tables. He came around the corner with a gigantic trash bag and just started tossing it all in the TRASH! I remember being totally shocked! All of that beauty and cash in the trash. That might we hauled out 4 large bags of centerpiece parts etc… all to the dumpster.

I have to admit, since then I have occasionally been known to trash a centerpiece or two. With the c0uples approval we tend to set them out on a table for guest to grab on their way out. Sometimes this works… sometimes we have to preserve the vessel so we can’t do this.

I ran across this website today and it made me so excited! Check this out! Reduce, reuse, recycle… even your wedding flowers.

ReBloom is a Cincinnati based charity organization that takes floral arrangements left over from lifetime celebrations and re-designs and distributes them to patients in local hospitals.

I wanted to send you a great big Thank YOU! I was the recipient of one of your repurposed flowers yesterday! I was in the hospital to receive a chemo treatment and in comes one of the nurses with a vase of flowers! I really can not tell you how much it lifted my spirits. They were just so unexpected since I'm only in the hospital for 2 days each time. Most of my friends and family lose track of my treatments and hospital visits. What made me even happier was that I am all about recyling and repurposing! I Love the entire concept! I plan to spread the word to everyone I know. Keep up the good work ... I really appreciate what you are doing! Thanks again.

Today we’re hearing from another super fab lady and business owner. She’s the owner of Five Dot Design. You might have heard us talk about her and her awesomeness in several previous posts when she worked with us on our Prime Time Party Rental tabletop and the A Night With The Pros Event. She always goes above and beyond for our clients… even with our crazy requests!

Before we let her chat with you… let’s take a look at some of the gorgeousness that comes out of her paper genius!

But don’t just take my word… here’s hers!

* What is your job/business?

I'm the paper girl- I create custom wedding invitations. We'll sit down in my studio in Newport and work together to design your wedding stationery- it's a very hands-on process for you.

* What drives you to do what you do every day?

I'll never get tired of hearing the little gasp that a client lets out when they see their invitations for the first time. Invitations are the first visual introduction to your wedding your guests receive and I don't believe that introduction should look like another bride's across town or even across the state. You put a lot of hard work into planning your wedding and adding so many personal touches and for me, those personal touches shouldn't stop with paper.

* What is a common misunderstanding from couples in your line of work?

Many think I'm a girl with a computer that happens to like paper. This isn't something I just dabble in- it's extremely fun work for me, but I take it very seriously. I realize my service is an investment and I would never be able to justify that investment if I didn't feel like I couldn't speak to my trade confidently and intelligently. I've put a lot of time and effort into finding the best resources and materials I can find, so that when we meet, you have options that work best with your budget.

Many girls think they'll save money creating their invitations or other wedding stationery on their own. It doesn't always end up costing less, however. For some, creating them on their own works out and for others, they aren't so lucky. What you mostly end up saving money on is in time.

When you hire me to create your wedding invitations, you're not just hiring me- you're hiring my experience in both graphic design and in wedding stationery. I invest multiple hours beyond that initial hour consult with you. You're also hiring me to attend to the details and communication that go into producing your stationery: sourcing paper compatible with your printing choice, working with the printer to ensure your files are ready to go and making sure the sizes of your printed pieces will go thru the mail without any problems.

* What is a common complaint you hear from couples about something that you do… and what is the reason why you do it this way?

The most common complaint I get is that I'm more expensive than what the budget allows. And honestly, that's okay. Every bride has different priorities when it comes to hiring her wedding vendors and paper isn't always towards the top of the list. There's a trade off to every choice a bride has to make. If you choose me, you might pay more, but you're also given the opportunity to create something that's just for you and the design is dictated by what you want. If you choose to order out of a catalog or online, you might not pay as much, but you may not have as the opportunity to get exactly what you want. In most cases, I might not be able to work with a client on her wedding invitations, but I can help her with her ceremony and reception pieces like programs, menus, escort cards and table numbers.

* What are some of the things you do that contribute to your bottom line?

I'm a one person operation right now, but I use freelancers from time to time which allows me to give my clients more style options. I make sure to attend design conferences to keep visually inspired and I browse wedding magazines and blogs to keep up with new trends and styles. I share an awesome studio space in Newport with four other wedding professionals, so if we're itching to work together and haven't done so in awhile, we'll come up with a fun concept and create a photoshoot or window display around that idea. It keeps us thinking creatively and keeps us trying new things without making our clients guinea pigs.

* What are some little known facts about your particular industry that brides really should know?

I can really only speak to me, but I'm a visual thinker so the more images you can provide to me, the better- of both what you do like and what you don't. What you don't like is sometimes more important than what you do like. I use sites like pinterest.com (http://pinterest.com/fivedotdesign/pins/) to share concept visuals with my clients and that allows us to be in constant contact with the vision of the event without sending countless emails or having multiple meetings. Any of your vendors can see the images you pin and add their own images to boards, making sure everyone involved in your wedding is on the same page visually. I also like to be in contact with a client's florist and/or event designer when I can to make sure what I provide paper-wise on the table will be cohesive with the other floral pieces and linens on the table.

* If you lived in a perfect world… engaged couples would….

Stay true to YOUR vision for YOUR wedding. Some of my most successful pieces design-wise are with clients where her vision and my vision were practically identical because I understood what she wanted. This allowed us to truly work together to create her wedding stationery. It's going to feel like you have to please everyone, and there might be a few things you have to compromise on when it comes to family, but in the end, it's YOUR wedding and be sure to hire wedding professionals that understand your vision, needs, wants and wishes.

Meet Nancy….

She’s the super cool one on the right. You may or may not have heard of her…. but I know you’ve all heard about her super fab company Brideface. Nancy is an awesome lady both professionally and personally. Her brides RAVE about their services. She’s a can’t go wrong pick for your wedding day makeup.

I mean who wouldn’t DIE to have a face made up like this on your wedding day:

Just wow!! So Nancy took some time to Uncork herself and talk a little about all of the fun stuff brides need to know about her and about what it means to own, operate, hire, and work with a top notch makeup designer. Here’s her take….

* What is your job/business?

I am the owner of BRIDEface makeup housecalls, which provides professional onsite makeup artistry for special events. We have been in business for six years and have a team of nine makeup artists. We specialize in airbrush makeup and individual lash enhancements, and several of our crew have trained under celebrity makeup artist Laura Mercier. Our studio is located in the Mainstrasse district of Covington Kentucky.

* What drives you to do what you do every day?

I truly love making people feel beautiful. It is the most photographed day of your life and knowing you look like the very best version of yourself really puts you at ease! It's an honor to be able to spend that rather intimate portion of their day with them, and it's something we take very seriously. Nothing makes my day more than pleas for foundation recommendations on Facebook or texts from Sephora regarding which mascara a client should choose. I'm on call!

* What is a common misunderstanding from couples in your line of work?

Most brides do not understand the difference between makeup for photography and "everyday" makeup. They say to me. "I know my makeup is supposed to be heavier." It's more about pigmentation and definition than it is about "heavy". You want to still look like you only more amazing!

The type of products you use,for example, can make or break the longevity of your look. Photos can "flatten" your features, and you need a skilled artist to highlight and contour your face to bring out your best features (and diminish others) Most of your wedding day you are viewed at a distance and your eyes need to "pop" from across a room.

* What are some of the things you do that contribute to your bottom line?

Must to my husband's chagrin,I constantly buy makeup! I always want to stay on top of what is new and fresh, whether it be product launches, learning new techniques in makeup classes out of town, and devouring fashion magazines. The members of my staff also work on commercial shoots, which keeps us up to speed creatively.

* If you lived in a perfect world… engaged couples would…

only hire true wedding pros. I cannot tell you how many emails I get from panicked brides who were planning to use the Mary Kay lady up the street, or their cousin Sue, only to find out the results at the practice session were not quite what they expected, or they have canceled on them last minute so they can go out of town that weekend. A true professional signs a contract, stays in communication, shows up when they say they will, gets your party done on a timely basis, uses proper hygienic practices, and has professional grade products. Their equipment is insured against loss. They also have the level of experience required to get through unexpected mishaps that could possibly occur. (I was once asked to cover two groomsmen's' black eyes at the last second. Never did get the real story on that one.)

Today we’re hearing from the amazing Brandon Lindsey of Cincinnati’s own HEY MR. DJ.

From Brandon:

My name is Brandon Lindsey. I own Hey! Mr. DJ Entertainment in Cincinnati Ohio and I’m a DJ and Master Of Ceremonies specializing in wedding receptions. It is now Sunday at 1:45am and I’ve just pulled into my driveway. About two hours ago I stepped to the microphone and congratulated Ryan and Stacy on their marriage. It was the final note of a magical day and night that left many of their guests telling them it was the best wedding reception they have ever been to.

About ten months ago Stacy called me and we spoke for the very first time. Neither of us knew that we would share one of the most important days of her life. In fact her first question was, “What do you charge for 4 hours?” I explained I don’t have a four hour package and for most of my clients I put in about 20 hours of work before I ever arrive at their event. This piqued her interest. We talked a little more and agreed to meet at my office.

Many brides don’t like that I refuse to quote an exact price on the phone. I don’t quote a price for a few reasons. The first reason is I don’t know what they need without talking to them more. I don’t know what will be required of me. So many weddings have so many different variables. The biggest reason however that I don’t want to quote a price is, I’m not cheap! I don’t compete with other DJs on price. I compete on value and I can’t show someone my value on the phone. I want to be able to show brides what I do that is AMAZING and usually they think I’m a great deal after that.

Many brides are like Stacy. When they call a DJ they think they are calling someone to simply play music at their wedding reception. Most are worried that if a DJ says something on the microphone it will be cheesy or overshadow them on their wedding day. Depending on the DJ they call, they may be correct. Most DJs have no training at all. They are self-taught amateurs whose years of experience consist of doing the same thing they have always done year after year. This results in average wedding receptions that are cookie cutter. I’m not like that. I want brides to know that I travel the country training, attending workshops and seminars. I want them to know that I brainstorm online with DJs and wedding professionals on a daily basis developing new creative ways to personalize their wedding day. I want brides to know why saying “Ladies and Gentlemen, at this time I’d like to” over and over again on the microphone, like most DJs do, will negatively impact their wedding day. I want couples to know why I was asked to speak in Las Vegas to DJs from all over the world about what I do. I want couples to know that their wedding can be different and better than they ever imagined. I want couples to know that five years from now their guests will remember, above all other things, moments that I can help them create at their wedding. The moments that stir emotion and make them cry, laugh, sing along and dance will be what their guests remember about their wedding reception. Those moments are what drive me.

I work with select couples and their wedding vendors to create a once in a lifetime event. I charge what I charge because I’m worth it. It amazes me that a couple would trust their event to a DJ who doesn’t charge enough money to even run a legitimate business. A real business has operating expenses like advertising, phone, gas, office supplies, equipment purchases and upkeep, accounting, legal music, training, staff, taxes, office space etc. There are only so many weekends in a year to earn money in this business. Chances are those guys that are cheaper are either hobbyist or not doing things the legal way. I’m just surprised people would trust their event to either group.

Don’t get me wrong I’m not complaining. I’m very busy and forced to turn away events even at my higher rates. I just wish every bride and groom would shop around, and educate themselves on what is out there. Stacy and Ryan did and she actually cried in our first meeting when I showed her an example of something I do. They also laughed in that meeting when I showed them some creative things I had recently done. They left enlightened and super excited. It was a 45 minute meeting that changed the entire outcome of their wedding reception. Over the next few months we got to know each other and we planned, from an entertainment perspective, a reception that was full of amazing moments, lots of fun and plenty of time left for dancing. Two hours ago after an amazing reception filled with tears, laughter and lots of dancing, Stacy walked over to me and hugged me. Ryan looked me in the eye and shook my hand. They both sincerely thanked me. As they turned to walk away, a guest stopped them and I heard her say “This was the best reception I have ever been to.” So as I walked into my house I still had too much adrenaline and emotion in my veins to go to bed. I decided to take the time to write these words. I hope it gives a little deeper look into what I do and will lead a few more couples to make their entertainment a priority.

Q: I keep going back and forth on the issue of changing my name after I get married? It’s such a huge decision… what are your thoughts?

In the last year or so name changing has become increasingly controversial and a major topic of discussion among couples… even before they get engaged.

I’ll back up a little to give my honest opinion… I got married to my high school sweetheart almost 10 years ago. One day after getting engaged a good friend from high school stopped in to my work and was appalled by the fact that I was going to change my name when I got married. I suppose appalled is pretty strong… but you could tell that she definitely did not agree with my decision. Oddly I remember thinking how strange it was that she felt so strongly about my decision. I married and went through the whole rig-a-ma-roll of changing my name and really never looked back.

Occasionally I use my former last name when I know the person I’m speaking to would know my parents. Other than that… I just wish my husband could have had a cooler name that DAAB. Sometimes when people ask about the name I laugh it off and say… I married into that one.

For me, I never thought about changing my name as controversial or as if I was loosing a certain identity.. frankly, I didn’t really think I had a choice… this was just what you did. I will say, I came from a conservative home where my parents and my husbands parent had been married for years, no divorces, no step kids, no spouse deaths, pretty much your all American pastor’s kid. I always knew one day I would change my name… cause that was the way I would show my future husband that I wanted to make a family with him.

The friend I spoke about before was raised primarily by her awesome single mom and her darling grandparents. She never felt connected to her birth name either and halfway through high school changed it to reflect her grandfather (who was the dominate male figure in her life). She had already experienced choosing a name that reflected her. That reflected the ties she felt to her family. She recently married as well… and she kept her grandfathers name.

So what am I getting at here?

Wait for it… it’s a total shocker…. EVERY PERSON IS DIFFERENT!

Every single person in the world experiences a different type of upbringing, a different level of sentimentalism, a heightened feeling of ownership, liberal or conservative parents, a fiancé with a strong opinion, career paths and choices, etc. etc. etc.

It would be nearly impossible for the same solution to be the best solution for everyone. I chose to change my name because I loved my husband and wanted us to start our own family with him as the lead of the home. That was my reason.

When making a decision about changing your name, really sit down and decide why or why not you would make this decision. What is your reason behind changing or not changing. Communicate this clearly with your future spouse and make a decision that feels right for you.

In the end this is what’s going to make you happy and feel like you fit in your name.

Someone needs to slap my fingers, yell at me, and put me in the corner… I have been a bad bad blogger!

It has been such a busy last couple of months and today I’m starting to feel as if I’m finding the top of the heaping pile of stuff I have to do.

For the last couple of weeks I have had more inquiries and bookings than I can keep up with… I’m so excited! I suppose August can be the new January (Note: in the wedding industry January usually begins the booking season)!

Since I know all of you have been checking back feverishly to see if I have updated the blog (*wink*) HERE I AM. I have a wham-doosey of a blog post coming so you CAN get excited for that. In the meantime I thought I’d share just a little about what we’ve been working on.

October 1st, our assistant consultant Sarah has taken on her first wedding. She’s been learning the planning ropes of the business and from what I can tell… the vendors she’s worked with are happy and so are the bride and groom. You go Sarah!

They are hosting their wedding at a brand new venue in the area called Magnolia Estates.

The grounds are under construction as of right now but it’s looking like it will provide a nice space for moderate budget weddings. Photos found on their website. http://magnoliaestate.com

Another wedding in the works for 2012 is proving to be pretty exciting. This wedding will be at the Inn at Oneonta in Kentucky.

We have several more in the works… and will be sharing more of their springboard inspirations in the very near future!

In our next installment of We Predict! we’re going to talk a little about something old becoming new again!

We Predict we’ll see an increased number of these beautiful arrangements! The Composite Bouquet!

The concept behind the composite bouquet is to start with one single flower as the center of the bouquet. Then petals are individually wired and layered in around the center flower.

It creates a large and singular looking flower.

Composites are typically made using roses. But can be creating using a variety of gorgeous flowers. Here’s some examples:

Composite Bouquets can also be called Glameria. Here’s a little history!

Almost forgotten, the composite-flower bouquet dates from the early 20th century. Unable to source the wide range of colors and year-round availability found in today’s hybrid roses, florists used this ingenious method of constructing huge ‘roses’ from the petals of gladioli. Then called ‘glameria’, these oversized blooms were worn by themselves on a hat or as a corsage, or several could be fashioned into a bouquet for the bride with an unlimited budget.

And here’s the part you’re all waiting for. What’s out?

There are so many creative ways to use pen paper technology stamps etcetcetc…. to create something amazing for a guest book! Dig deep into your creativity and come up with your own unique ideas!

Question, Queries and Conundrums? Dayton Ohio Wedding Planner

I receive loads of questions all the time from my clients, brides I meet, and emails that I thought it might be fun to answer them right here on the Planny Pants blog!

Here’s our very first question?

“So everyone as of yesterday started getting their invites from us in the mail- and everyone is already telling me VIA text that they are coming. After all the time I spent licking and stamping I sure hope they plan to send their cards back. Should I accept the texted responses as a yes? Should I text back?”

In this technological day and age sometimes the importance of the paper RSVP gets lost on your guests. While a quick text to indicate that they are excited about your wedding and are looking forward to it is fine and welcome it should never replace an actual RSVP card.

Here’s the reasons why.

1. Texts are nearly impossible to track. Having a paper card arrive in the mail is a much easier way to track not only your positive and negative responses but also a way to help you track who you’re still missing responses from and who you might need to follow up with in the weeks before the wedding.

2. Often times an RSVP card will indicate what menu selection the guest would like to choose from. I highly doubt you’re going to receive a text that says… Hey Bride, so excited for your wedding. We’re coming! Oh and BEEF! Those selections are uber important for your catering company and for your bottom line budget.

3. Texts make no real commitment. It’s a common known fact that when you don’t really want to talk to someone or don’t really want to make a commitment that text is the way to go. Never count on texted RSVP’s as they aren’t always accurate. When someone takes time to respond to your stamped envelope it typically (not always however) means they’ve checked their calendar, written it down, and actually plan to be there.

So then How Do You Respond?

Send back a quick and sweet response… something like this…

Hey Guest, So glad that you are excited about the wedding. I can’t wait to see you there. Please be sure to send back the RSVP card. Trying to be super organized! See you soon!

On that note. Remember that if you’re planning to not accept texted RSVP’s, when trying to collect confirmations from guests closer to the wedding, you’ll have to pick up the phone and call guests. While it isn’t Kosher for them to send a texted RSVP it also isn’t Kosher for you to send a “hey are you coming text”.

Many of the traditional etiquette rules are changing but in the case of invitations… I say erring on the side of caution is always the better way to go.

Have you heard about Wish Upon A Wedding?

Wish Upon a Wedding is a nonprofit 501 (c) (3) organization that provides weddings and vow renewals to couples facing terminal illness or other serious life-altering circumstances, regardless of sexual orientation. Often, couples facing such situations do not have the energy, time, money, or resources needed to plan their wedding. Our organization takes care of all the details, offering couples a chance to relax and enjoy a very special day while surrounded by the love of their closest family and friends.

Recently Wish Upon A Wedding hosted an online auction where Wedding Vendors from all over the United States donated items and services for brides and couples to bid on. It felt so great to be able to donate our script calligraphy services to the Auction.

A Scrapbook of Shoes! Dayton Ohio Wedding Planner

I promised this post last week and I’m just now getting around to it. The other day I had the “pleasure” of cleaning out everything on my closet floor for the carpet cleaners. I just kept pulling and pulling shoes out from the ginormous pile. Every time I’d pull a new shoe out I would look at it. Immediately some special event I’d worn those shoes to or some group I was involved in would come to mind.

For example, in high school I was a total Gleek. I was involved in a show choir called Octet. I wore silly costumes, danced like a fool, fell in love with the wrong boy, and wore the same shoes every time.

It’s a horrible pic but there I am in the front row. When I saw these shoes in particular I realized… these shoes are like a little scrapbook of the places I’ve been in my life.

All of the shoes in my closet were bought for a reason, had some purpose, and were usually worn for a specific event. I remember why I bought them, I remember what they were worn to, and I remember the emotions around their purpose.

I have a closet full of old shoes doesn’t sound nearly as exciting as I have a closet full of memories! Do you have a memorable pair of shoes?

SO… how does this relate to weddings?

The thing is… every time you look at the shoes you wore on your wedding day they are going to bring back memories of something. Make those memories good ones! Choose shoes that you love and are comfortable. Be sure to break them in before you wear them on the wedding day. Also, be sure you’re going to be able to wear them again.

When you pull those shoes out of your closet to go with a super chic outfit, you’ll be wearing a little piece of your life’s history. Make it count!

Shoe Appeal Wednesday… Just on Thursday! Dayton Ohio Wedding Planner

So yesterday was my husbands 31st birthday! We are getting so old! Thankfully he’ll be older than me for a little while so I can tease him endlessly!

Since it was his birthday I was far away from my computer. We did stop in at Prime Time Party Rental for their Wine and Dine Open House. It was so fun. We were there mid afternoon and you could definitely tell it was going to be a rockin’ party later that evening. It was so nice to run into the lovely Megan and clan from Party Pleasers. It was so nice chatting with them about all of the cool stuff up and coming for the Dayton Wedding Connection. Couples, some cool stuff is happening!!

I digress… I’m here to talk about SHOES!!! I heart shoes! So I was searching zappos the other day and do you just ever get the urge to push the little button that say highest price first? Oh I do…. but it’s a bad thing!!! Cause then you start to drool on your computer over something you KNOW you could never afford!! But that is where I found these!

Prime Time Tabletop Competition- Dayton, Ohio Wedding Planner

I recently had the opportunity to participate in Prime Time Party Rentals tabletop competition. Honestly this is like putting a little kid in a candy store and saying… yeah sure… eat or take whatever you want!! The idea is to use any of the inventory in Prime Time to create a fantastic table.

So here is where I started. A long time ago I ran across this photo of this couture gown and fell in love. Isn’t it gorgeous!

I knew I wanted to base the concept of the table on this gown.

The original plan was to use a black satin floor length linen. With a cream overlay. There were many options available until I found the beautiful rosette table runners.

I solicited the help of the amazing Kristen Little of Five Dot Designs. Poor girl I put her through the ringer asking for something unique and hand cut. I might add… she did a fabulous job with these gorgeous fleur de lis place card holders, custom hand cut table number, and beautiful hand cut menu cards.

In order to add some uniqueness to the design I chose to use 2 4 ft. tables pushed side by side to create seating for 6. This allowed me the space to add decorum via glasses and tableware.

A gold charger acted as the base with a glass charger of swirls set atop. Using gold rim cream colored plates I wrapped the salad plate with a black satin napkin tying them through a frame decorum.

4 crystal glasses were used to add fullness and glitz to the table while the rosette table runners were pleated and used as chair covers for gold chivari chairs.

In order to bring the final touches to the table I asked Jim Rauch of Unique Designs to help bring my vision to life. We came together and voila! Beauty!

I feel we’ve done the dress justice by creating this beautifully couture table. Thank you to the talented vendors who helped bring this table to life!

Pretty Stinkin’ Exciting News!

So… yesterday I received some pretty fan flippin tastic news! But first I have to go back and share a little about the process.

I recently collaborated with wonderfully talented shop owners and wedding vendors to design and execute a photo shoot inspired by Marie Antoinette.

We were published on Classic Bride and in several other blogs…. and re-tweeted like 5 million times! That was pretty exciting in itself.

I don’t know… like a month or so ago I was reading my Facebook feed as I am accustom to doing often {only a TAD addicted}. I find the best ideas to send to brides from the fantastic designers, brands, and wedding publications I am connected to on Facebook.

So Wedding Style posted a request for photo submissions. I thought… hey what the heck. What have I got to loose but a single email.

So… bravely I sent an email with several pictures and a link for them to view more photos from our Marie Shoot.

WELL!!!!!!! Yesterday I received an email from the original contact. She reported that our photos have been sent to the art department for consideration for publication!!!!

What? {I have to say it’s a good thing I wasn’t on the phone because I might have dropped it on the ground… or screamed in the person’s ear… or oh I don’t know… but I’m sure it would be embarrassing}!

Let me just say Wedding Style is an internationally esteemed wedding magazine. They feature only some of the best of the best designers and weddings. Many {and I say that lightly because it’s ALL…} wedding vendors find the magazine inspirational and desirable. I know I do!

I feel so honored and totally blessed that we have even made it past the first batch of eyes and onto the second! Thrilled.

So cross all of your fingers and all of your toes and anything else on your body that can be crossed without causing too much discomfort… ! AND say a big WOO HOO along side me and all of the awesome vendors involved!

Head Scratching Start to 2011

Ranting, Rambling, and Musing about to commence so hang in there with me.

2010 was a wonderful year. Hand in Hand Bridal came back in a powerful way and we are moving forward into the year with excitement and anticipation for good things.

As you probably know balancing all the balls in ones life can be a complicated process and sometimes you have balls that are so beautiful you don’t ever want to drop them. Sometimes you choose to drop the ball to lighten your load and other times you just hold it up there struggling to know what to do with.

In my particular case, there’s a few balls that I have crafted carefully and let me tell ya they have turned out beautifully. These balls I cherish and cultivate and they become more beautiful with time and energy. Those balls are my marriage, my children, and my family.

There are some balls I have recently dropped because I realized the number of balls I was juggling were just way too many! I couldn’t give the kind of energy and effort they deserved and had to let them go knowing that they will wait patiently for me to pick them up again when I’m ready.

Then there’s those balls that you hold up wondering exactly what you should do with them. For me there are balls that I just don’t even know what I want them to look like or how I want them to fit into my life. These balls are the ones that make me scratch my head and struggle to move forward.

NOW… I must say I am a professional and perpetual ball juggler. I rarely say no. I’m always coming up with more balls to add to my agenda. Often I find myself texting or chatting with my best friend telling him how overwhelmed I am and how I’m not sure how I’ll get everything done I’ve committed to doing. He always reminds me of the last time I did this and how beautifully everything turned out or how well I completed the tasks last time. Now I ALWAYS have good intentions to cultivate these new balls and turn them into something beautiful but somehow still don’t know what they should look like or how they fit into my life.

By now you’re wondering what all of this BALL talk is about? HAR HAR… get your mind out of the gutter… !

THIS BLOG!

This blog is one of those things on my agenda that I just haven’t been able to cultivate… to make beautiful… and be authentic. I’m still not sure how it fits into my everyday life and or how it relates to the reader. It’s definitely not beautiful in my eyes and it certainly hasn’t been a great representation of myself and who Hand in Hand Bridal is as a company.

In 2010 we created a blog roster like… well everyone. We had a plan for exactly what we would post every month for the whole year. I thought maybe it would help to keep things on track and create some interest from all of you. And… I did just that.

SO WHAT’S THE PROBLEM?

The problem is I’M BORED! And my blog looks exactly like everyone else’s blog. Style Me Pretty created this standard that now every bridal blog is trying to live up to. And frankly I fell into that trap. I tried very hard to give resourceful, creative, beautiful ideas in each post. The time involved in finding those great ideas and writing the post was outrageous and honestly not me at all. Seriously… gag me with a ball jar already!

WHAT IS ME THEN?

You would never see my house in Home and Gardens or Martha Stewart. I know… shocker. Not because it’s ugly, mismatched or cluttered. As a matter of fact my house is stunningly gorgeous just not in the same way wedding blogs are portraying typical design to be. I have a very warm, rustic, and French home. Don’t think shabby chic… Think gorgeous warm/rich downtown apartment.

Like this. So while the truth hurts… I have gone away from my true style. Call it poseritis… I don’t know. But it has GOT to STOP!

NOW WHAT?

So the other day I’m sitting at my desk just head scratching away about the blog. I like many others have a few favorite blogs I read occasionally. One of those is written by an American woman who married a French man and lives in Paris. She just… chats. She talks about life as an American in France. It inspires me. It makes me laugh with her and at her. I feel sad for her when she’s sad. That’s because she’s being real! Real with her life all together. Although… she does call her husband Big Cheese?????

I am starting a personal and one person reaching campaign for honest blogging. A day in the life of a mom/wife/business owner/stylist/diva/wedding planner/ teacher/ crafter/ church worker/ designer/ woman!!! Everyday I’m working on something… thinking about something…. doing something. So why not share it here.

This way brides who click through from my website hoping to learn more about me as a planner/stylist/designer will get a better idea about who I am and what I’m doing. This way other vendors who humor me and read my blog on occasion will hopefully get a good laugh at my crazy ways.

I am not a super interesting human! How dare I say such a thing! But unfortunately it's not totally inaccurate. I don’t hob knob with Preston Bailey and Colin Cowie on the weekends. I don’t always lunch at new five star restaurants. I’m not the foremost expert on the Royal Wedding… nor do I care to be. I’m just a local wedding planner with local challenges. Hiccups, unique thinking, ever pleasing, and overly-extend, I’m just me! And this is it! This is what you’ll be getting from here on out. Just me. Honest, upfront, broken, fabulous, REAL!

Irish Wedding Traditions!

There is one wedding Irish tradition that states: ‘Marry in May and Rue the Day’ while another states: ‘Marry in April if you can, joy for maiden and for man’.

When I told my daughter about this Irish superstition, she changed her wedding date so that she’d be married in April!

What began as a search for Irish traditions and customs that she could incorporate into her celebration ended up as an incredible pile of notes that eventually took on a life of its own. Long after her wedding, I was still obsessed with delving into history and folklore, looking for everything I could find on how weddings were celebrated in Ireland long ago.

I am convinced that if couples make the effort, they can have a totally Irish celebration from beginning to end – even to the pre-wedding parties. There’s one quaint custom where the groom was invited to the bride’s house right before the wedding and they cooked a goose in his honor.

It was called Aitin’ the gander – it has to be where we get the expression ‘his goose is cooked!’ We threw one of these dinner parties for my daughter and everyone had a great time. (The apple-potato stuffing has become a family favorite!).

There are so many other traditions, customs and just an incredible amount of folklore to draw upon, that it would be remiss to be of Irish descent and not take advantage of all the possibilities.

Here are just a few ideas culled from what eventually has become a 200-plus page book called ‘The Traditional Irish Wedding’ and it is now available in the United States and will be released in Ireland this spring. As complete as I could make it, the book covers attire, decor, menus, recipes, music, toasts, vows, and perhaps of most value, a resource listing that will help you find everything from Irish wedding gowns and tiaras to sheet music for a Celtic Mass.

Here are some more:

* Bunratty Meade is a honey wine that’s served at the Bunratty Castle medieval banquet. It’s from a recipe based on the oldest drink in Ireland and if you’ve never tasted it, it’s well worth trying. In the old days, it was consumed at weddings because it was thought that it promoted virility. (If a baby was born nine months after the wedding, it was attributed to the mead!) Couples also drank it from special goblets for a full month following the wedding, which is supposedly where we get the word honeymoon. This was to protect the couple from the fairies coming to spirit the bride away.

* Lucky horseshoe. Irish brides used to carry a real horseshoe for good luck. (Turned up so the luck won’t run out). You can get porcelain horseshoes which most Irish brides carry these days, or one made of fabric which is worn on the wrist.

* Magic Hanky. This charming custom involves having the bride carry a special hanky that with a few stitches can be turned into a christening bonnet for the first baby. With a couple of snips it can be turned back into a hanky that your child can carry on his/her wedding day.

* Make-up bells. The chime of bells is thought to keep evil spirits away, restore harmony if a couple is fighting, and also remind a couple of their wedding vows. Giving a bell as a gift has become an Irish tradition. You could also have your greeters hand out tiny bells to your guests to ring as you process. (You might want to let them know when they’re supposed to be rung – perhaps mention it in your program along with an explanation of the custom). Guests could also ring their little bells at the reception in lieu of clinking glasses.

* Irish Dancers. Consider hiring a group of Irish dancers to hand out your programs before the ceremony. Dressed in their full regalia, it would add a wonderful touch of pageantry and color. They could also dance at the reception later. We did this at my daughter’s reception and it was a major hit.

* Music. There’s so much wonderful Irish music available, you’ll have no problems in finding appropriate selections for both the ceremony and the reception. The difficulty will be in deciding which pieces to play!

* Readings: My daughter had the following Irish wedding vow on the front of her program:

By the power that Christ brought from heaven, mayst thou love me. As the sun follows its course, mayst thou follow me. As light to the eye, as bread to the hungry, as joy to the heart, may thy presence be with me, oh one that I love, ’til death comes to part us asunder.

On the back of the program, she had this old Irish proverb: Don’t walk in front of me, I may not follow. Don’t walk behind me, I may not lead. Walk beside me and just be my friend.

* The Irish Wedding Song. Very popular at contemporary Irish weddings. We had two friends sing this at my daughter’s reception while the newlyweds cut the cake. (Afterwards I thought we should have had the lyrics typed up and placed on the tables so that everyone could join in).

* Flowers. In the old days, many Irish brides wore a wreath of wildflowers in their hair; they also carried them in bouquets. For my daughter’s wedding, our florist designed gorgeous bouquets that included a flower called Bells of Ireland. In Wales, brides carried live myrtle and gave a sprig to each bridesmaid which they planted. If it grew, the bridesmaid would marry within the year. If you’re planning a more general Celtic celebration, this might be worth considering.

* Ancient custom: In the old days, couples ate salt and oatmeal at the beginning of their reception: Each of them took three mouthfuls as a protection against the power of the evil eye. Also, when a couple is dancing, the bride can’t take both feet off the floor because the fairies will get the upper hand. Fairies love beautiful things and one of their favorites is a bride. There’s many an Irish legend about brides being spirited away by the little people! For the same reason, it’s bad luck for a bride to wear green. I’ve also heard that it’s bad luck for anyone to wear green at an Irish wedding – but I think it really only applies to the bride. It’s also bad luck for a bride or the groom to sing at their own wedding.

Portents and omens:

* A fine day meant good luck, especially if the sun shone on the bride. If you’re a Roman Catholic, one way to make certain that it won’t rain is to put a statue of the Infant of Prague outside the church before your ceremony.

* It was unlucky to marry on a Saturday.

* Those who married in harvest would spend all their lives gathering

* A man should always be the first to wish joy to the bride, never a woman

*It was lucky to hear a cuckoo on the wedding morning, or to see three magpies

* To meet a funeral on the road meant bad luck and if there was a funeral procession planned for that day, the wedding party always took a different road

* The wedding party should always take the longest road home from the church

* It was bad luck if a glass or cup were broken on the wedding day

*A bride and groom should never wash their hands in the same sink at the same time-it’s courting disaster if they do

* It was said to be lucky if you married during a ‘growing moon and a flowing tide’

* When leaving the church, someone must throw an old shoe over the bride’s head so she will have good luck

* If the bride’s mother-in-law breaks a piece of wedding cake on the bride’s head as she enters the house after the ceremony, they will be friends for life.

And for all engaged couples and their families in the midst of pre-wedding chaos, I raise a parting glass: May all your joys be pure joy and all your pain champagne.

Prohibition-Era Elegance: So long, Mad Men—the most stylish new show is Boardwalk Empire and brides are noticing. From dusty nudes and lace dresses for the ladies to wing-tip shoes for the men, couples are falling in love with the dapper fashion of the 1920s. And it wouldn’t feel like Prohibition without alcohol. To reinterpret the boozy nights of the Roaring ’20s, couples are serving up “moonshine” and Prohibition “bathtub gin” in their very own speakeasy bar, all while guests dance the night away—to jazz, naturally.

The Redefined Princess: With a royal wedding around the corner, you can bet Kate Middleton’s going to alter what princess style is all about. Introducing Sarah!

We are so pleased to introduce you to our new 2011 intern. Sarah will be joining the Hand in Hand Bridal team for this years many PR events, weddings, and functions.

Sarah is a Marketing and PR major at the University of Dayton.

She is a dedicated student and an active member of her sorority and enjoy her classes. She is also a super sweet girl. She fell in love with event planning while working on an event for the Marketing Club. She says “Everything that could have gone wrong did.” She was still in love with event planning afterwards.

Sarah will be sharing some of her thoughts on the blog in the near future. But I thought I’d share with you some of the top 10 fun and quirky things she shared about herself with me!

I love wearing high heels.
I love flying and I really love being in airports.
I only ever buy hot chocolate when I go to Starbucks, never coffee.
I love all things red. My car is red, my favorite purse, my favorite jacket, my sheets, my loofa...
I won second place at a country swing dancing competition in the-middle-of-no-where-Wyoming!
I have the curliest hair of anyone that I know but I keep it straight. (My mom and I both recently donated 10 inches of hair!)
I am teaching myself Italian.
I introduced one of the highest ranking female members of NATO to a group of over one thousand people at the NATO building in Prague in 2007
I almost majored in photography. (Currently in the process of saving to buy a digital SLR camera in the next few months!)
I was born in Atlanta, Georgia so I am a southern girl at heart. My southern accent comes out sometimes!

Vera Wang’s: White In David’s Stores Today!

Vera Wang is known for her romantic bridal gowns—and their consequently hefty price tags. But the designer has teamed up with David's Bridal to launch an extremely affordable collection—dubbed White by Vera Wang—that still has all the hallmarks of an iconic Vera Wang wedding gown. The designer spoke to a select group of bridal editors earlier today (including me!), saying that the collection "embraces her true design aesthetic." Although the gowns feature all of the "whimsical" and "youthful" details that Wang self describes as her trademarks, the prices are what's truly stunning: All gowns cost between $600 and $1400, a far cry from her couture one-of-a-kind dresses. And that's not all the designer is offering: In addition to the twelve gowns, there are also hair accessories, veils and even Vera's oh-so-fashionable belts and sashes. The best part? You don't need to be model-thin to wear these designer dresses! Currently, David's will stock White by Vera Wang in sizes 0-14, but the duo has plans in the next few season to extend their offerings up to a size 26. White by Vera Wang hits 150 David's Bridal locations this Friday, February 11, and with so gorgeous gowns, they're sure to sell out quick.

We are so honored to be featured on Classic Bride for our Marie Antoinette inspired shoot. Please enjoy the post here.

I was particularly thrilled to receive this inspiration shoot as a submission for a few reasons ... this gorgeous shoot was actually shot in a small Ohio town right next to the tiny one I spent many years of my young life growing up! I also happen to know one of the interior designers, Jean Winham, who helped stage and design the lovely grounds. Her gorgeous shop is always brimming with divine finds so I was obviously super excited to see what she, her fellow shop owners/designers and several other talented designers and wedding vendors from the area came up with ... and ... wow! I still feel like I could be looking at a magazine spread that was shot in the French countryside ... Let's have a look and make sure to scroll down to hear from the talented team about the entire shoot process!

And I love this cute behind-the-scenes photo:

Wow, right??!? I think one of my favorite details is the jazzed-up deer head ... isn't that a great touch? Okay, and maybe the Louboutins, too! ;o) Seriously, everything is fabulous! I think this is a great example of taking a theme and giving it your own spin with lots of whimsical and modern touches. The Hostess cupcakes work surprisingly well amidst all the finery, don't they?
From the talented team who worked on the shoot:
Channeling Marie Antoinette and her regal beauty and the high elegance of French royalty, a collaborative effort was made to design an inspiration-to-reality shoot that would be fascinatingly gorgeous and filled with ideas appropriate for the modern bride.
The team included a wedding planner, a photographer, three interior designers, a makeup artist, a hair stylist and the chic benevolence of a Kettering, Ohio, homeowner, Deborah “Fifi” Froelich, who opened the doors to her Tudor-style home for the early fall shoot.Since Marie Antoinette was an avid equestrian and her mother adored the painting of her in her riding uniform, we were inspired to choose décor straight from the outdoors. Interior designers Debbie Basnett, Dana Hookassian and Jean Winham of Vintage Scout Interiors staged the expansive grounds, keeping scale and proportion in mind to make each scene visually pleasing and electrifying.
Our lovely bride and groom, Ashley and John Lavin, who were recently married, became the stars of the day. Alan Leonard of Square One Hair Salon & Day Spa piled the bride’s brunette lush locks in an intricate up-do, a la Marie Antoinette, that was dramatic, but ultimately flattering for her fine features. “In the up-do, I used different shades of hair extensions and a foam ball wrapped with hair, positioned it and started pinning it together,” he says. “It’s a style that can be re-created to fit anyone.” Pin Me Up Couture provided the beautiful hand beaded hair fascinators and the vintage inspired garter.

Michelle Drake Richardson, A Vogue Idea, styled the makeup to evoke feminine allure by accenting Ashley’s lips and eyes. The effect was stunning, as Michelle created custom blends of different colors, including peaches, pinks and reds.
The veritable feast set on a 24-foot rustic table included French cheeses, artisan breads, fruits, vegetables and delectable sweets. For a tongue-in-cheek nod to the famous quote often attributed to Marie Antoinette, “Let them eat cake,” we included Hostess cupcakes. The gorgeous springerle cookies were hand pressed and provided by Queen City Cookies.
Photographer Tracy Abston, Pictures by Tracy, used natural lighting. The late afternoon sun was magnificent. “I shoot with the Canon EOS-1Ds Mark III SLR Digital Camera. ... The key ingredients for this shoot: a gorgeous model who has worked with me before, hair and makeup, and all the beautiful styling.”
The designers pulled out some interior accents to enhance the natural setting. Fifi brought out her formidable collection of transferware and silver for the table settings. Vintage jewels provided by Vintage Scout were used to adorn parts of the table and Perez, the famous white peacock. The centerpiece was created using an old log, succulents, heads of ornamental cabbage and kale, mushrooms and moss. Vintage pewter goblets paired with thin crystal glasses adorned the place settings. The napkins were repurposed from vintage lace curtains. The effect? Rustic, handmade and decadent.
The bride’s own strapless Pronovias gown and her Christian Louboutin shoes were the perfect wardrobe for our rustic-gone-glam look. The extended A-Line gown with a sweetheart neckline, pearl-and-crystal-encrusted bodice, and a ruffled skirt instantly brought modern elegance. The bouquet was made using hypercium berries, white alstromeria and baby’s breath, with a common weed as an unexpected accent.
The invitations were designed by Kellie Daab of Hand & Hand Bridal with a nod to the outdoors by using elements of wood. The design was completely hand-cut and affixed to the wood before printing. All of the pieces rest in the gorgeous coordinating box. The beautiful flowers and logs you see affixed to the invitation were hand cut using a precision tool and lots of time and concentration. The cheese tags, too, were created using the same wood paper and were backed with the coordinating paper and antiqued.
Overall, this shoot was a huge success and so perfectly vogue. We encourage brides to constantly use images as inspiration to create something totally their own. Here we have taken something so classic and have given it a whole new unexpected twist.

Kellie’s Thanksgiving Table

Reason: Thanksgiving celebration with family and friends

Thanksgiving is one of my favorite holidays. In addition to stuffing myself with a lot of my favorite food (hello mashed potatoes!), I really enjoy getting to spend time with my family.

Of course, sitting at a beautifully festive table is pretty fabulous too. When Kellie Daab sent us pictures of her Thanksgiving, we knew we wanted to share it with all of you. Check out her festive table setting…

Kellie says:

It was my first time hosting Thanksgiving dinner at my new house so I wanted it to be special. The first dilemma was finding enough place settings for everyone. I actually found a great deal at the grocery store on interchangeable plates for 25 cents each and worked from there.

I found a table cover that worked perfectly and I created the centerpieces and other little details myself. I used pumpkins, leaves, and seed pods to incorporate the natural elements of the season on to my table.

It is a wonder what the simplest of things can add to your table!

The meal was a traditional Thanksgiving meal, complete with turkey and mashed potatoes.

Each member of my family always comes to bring their favorite dish and if there are new guests I try to make sure to include their favorites as well.

Before dinner we all gather around the table and share something we are thankful for and afterwards we feast.

After all the plates are wiped clean, the women search through the Black Friday ads and prepare for the next day of extreme shopping.

Typically, we exchange Black Friday gifts as well.

For example, one year I did survival kits for getting through the next day’s crowded malls.

It may sound cheesy but it’s fun and we get really into it.

For those throwing their first Thanksgiving dinners, I would advise that:

First, make sure you have enough of everything to do up the holiday right. During this season there are a surprising amount of sales so you never know what kind of deals you will find.
Second, it’s great to have extra warmers. I know that we ran out of places to keep all our dishes warm last year and renting or even buying warmers would have saved me a lot of stress.
My last tip would be to prepare in advance. I set my entire table the night before and then use a pop-up table the next day for breakfast and preparation.

Remember, don’t try to do it all. Ask for others to bring dishes or decorative pieces. It’s a day to be thankful, not to be stressed so just enjoy!

I wanted to take an opportunity today to verbalize just some of the things Hand in Hand Bridal has to be thankful for this year.

I have been so blessed over the years to have the most wonderful clients. Many of whom I now call friend. It’s always wonderful getting to know them, learn their likes and their visions. I am so thankful for loving couples who are excited about their long futures together. I am thankful for all of you!

I have been so blessed to encounter wonderful fellow vendors who have a passion and love for the wedding industry much like myself. They work hard to provide the best service they possibly can to the brides and grooms of Southwest Ohio. We are so blessed to have many talented artists and wonderful people who do top notch work. I am thankful for all of you!

I am incredibly blessed to have family and friends who are so supportive and active in Hand in Hand Bridal. They constantly encourage me to push harder and do things I would not have imagined. It’s because of all of them that the business is where it is today. I am thankful for all of you!

What are you thankful for? Make sure you take the time to tell someone you’re thankful for them. Stop and think of all the ways you have been blessed and be thankful for those things today!

One Starry Night

Since we’ve been on the topic of paper I just had to share this idea that’s been bopping around in my head for years. This design will make a huge bang for a smaller buck.

These are called Moravian Stars. They are typically hung and lit from above. They cast a beautiful glow over the room and would be lovely hanging from a ceiling throughout the reception area.

You’re Invited!

Since invitations are those pieces of paper you’ll spend the most time, money, and thought on I thought I would talk a little about this in todays post.

There are so many types of invitations that it could take miles and miles of pictures to give you an idea of how expansive the options are.

I’ll feature a few here… but first let’s talk about invitation etiquette. While etiquette rules have shifted quite a bit over the years, in the area of invitations very little has changed.

Back in the day it was proper etiquette to handwrite every single invitation. By 1922 when Emily Post wrote her very first Etiquette book invitations “whether they are to be engraved or to be written by hand (and their acceptances and regrets)…”

For a little humor… we’ll add Emily Posts original opinions straight from her book written in 1922.

“The invitation to the ceremony is engraved on the front sheet of white note-paper. The smartest, at present, is that with a raised margin- or plate mark. At the top of the sheet the crest (if the family of the bride has the right to use one) is embossed without color. Otherwise the invitation bears no device. The engraving may be in script, block, shaded block, or old English. The invitation to the ceremony should always request “the honour” of your “presence,” and never the “pleasure” of your “company.” (Honour is spelled in the old-fashioned way, with a “u” instead of “honor.”)

The pretentiousness of it all makes me giggle. Here are a few no nonsense suggestions!

Write out names in full, including middle names. Omit a middle name if necessary, rather than using an initial.
It's appropriate to use the British spelling for "honour" and "favour", unless you prefer to use the American spelling of these words.
Spell out all words, including the hour, the date and the year. Spell out all words in the address, including Street, Road and Avenue. The two exceptions to this rule in an address are Saint (St.) and Mount (Mt.)
Use Roman numerals in names, rather than "the third" or "3rd."
For ceremonies taking place in a house of worship, use "request the honour of your presence." Ceremonies taking place in a non-religious setting should say, "request the pleasure of your company."

It’s time to move on… or is it?

Well welcome to November! Normally at this monthly juncture we would be moving on to discuss and entirely different subject. But since October got away from us AND I am completely obsessed I thought I’d spend this next month concentrating more on all things paper. There’s just so much you could do with paper that it really could have it’s own unique blog. Ok… who’s gonna get started on that?

This post has been percolating in my head for a while now. Only because there’s so many creative options and I predict we’re only going to see many many many more.

Today’s lesson class is about escort cards. Let me first give a little background definition slash clarification on this issue.

Q: Isn’t an escort card the same thing as a place card?

A: Umm… almost… but not quite. A place card is an indication of where one is asked to sit. Place cards are usually on the table in advance to event and before the guests even arrive. The mark the exact seat you would like that guests to sit in. When using place cards the host of the event must be pro-active in creating a way for guests to quickly and easily find their seats. In large scale events guests are usually checked in by an attendant and told their table number or escorted to their seats. In smaller events such as a wedding a nice sign indicating their table numbers is a wonderful and convenient gesture. These are usually called seating charts.

Seating Charts can be used as a stand alone or along with place cards.

Here’s some ideas for using place cards.

So you get the point I bet. There are so many many ways to make the place cards at your wedding or event fabulous!!!

Now onto the craziness that is escort card tables. I have to say thinking up something grand for these tables is one of my favorite favorite things to do!! Escort cards and their tables are a whole different elephant. These cards are usually placed where the guests can pick them up by themselves and be directed to their table. The escort card trend is a huge one and there are so many wonderful and creative ways to go about using these lovely little pieces of paper.

Here’s some ideas from things I’ve found or saved in my online look book.

So you see the possibilities are as endless as your imagination and your local craft stores product supply. Don’t be afraid to get creative with paper, glue, and stuff you find that you love! It always pays off when you have a perfectly suited and totally personal wedding that reflects you and your honey!

The Things One Can Do With Paper!

I have to say my mouth hit the floor when I saw this post on the blog Ruffled.

I would call myself extremely creative…. but I can’t say I would have thought of this!

These art installations were created out of simple paper cones and stuffed into chicken wire. They were hanging in the 4 corners of the reception space. These would make such a huge impact for very very little cost!

Here are the step by step instructions:

Step 1. Cut chicken wire to desired length and width.
Step 2. Twist wire into the shape you want it to be. The more twists, the more interesting it will look.
Step 3. Tie one end of the rope to the chicken wire in a couple different spots. Throw the other end over whatever you will be hanging it from and pull the wire up until it is 4-5 feet above the ground. The the end you are pulling on to something heavy until you are ready to raise it to the finished height.
Step 4. Roll paper as shown in the pictures. Start at one of the short ends and roll towards the other. Try to roll it into a cone shape.
Step 5. Stick the smaller end of the cone into one of the chicken wire squares, and the cone should pop open to fit the whole and will stay in place.
Step 6. Continue adding paper cones until the chicken wire looks full (you do not have to fill each and every square, just eye it until it looks right)
Step 7. Raise the finished sculpture to whatever height you wish and then tie the end to the finished piece to keep it in place.

Sounds so easy I want to go right out there and try it!!! How about you? What have you done with paper.

Shoe Appeal Wednesday

It’s been a few Wednesdays since we’ve done this (my favorite) type of post. So here we are!

Since we’re talking about paper this month I thought we might feature these. Paper shoes!

These were designed by using decoupage and adhering paper to an already existing shoe. The flowers were fashioned from paper by tearing strips and rolling. With a little hot glue or contact cement adhere the flowers and strips for the leaves and voila!

What a great way to repurpose an old pair of shoes. Oh how green of you! But one tip… don’t get caught in the rain!

The Importance of Paper

Well I know it’s been a while since my blog has been active. Let me tell you I have been so so busy. 2011 is going to be a very active year for Hand in Hand Bridal. We have so many great events coming up in the next months. There are also so many things we have done but can’t show you yet. So hop on our roller coaster cause it’s going to be a crazy ride these next couple of months.

So now with that said, it’s time to get back on track around here!! This month and into November we’re going to talk about the importance of paper and how to incorporate all different types of it into your wedding décor and theme.

If you knew me well, you would know I am an absolute, certifiably insane, paper product addict. I almost get giddy when I find out something new has hit the market. I fall in love with corny things like patterned paper and paper clips.

Here’s a little sneak peek at my own “little” collection.

So this month we’re going to talk about all the ways we use paper when planning a wedding.

Invitations is the first that comes to mind of course.

Record Holding Wedding Dress! OMG!

You must see this fabulous dress decorated with 43.008 Swarovski pearls and crystals. It belongs to a bride in Bucharest, Romania who married March 24, 2010. The outfit was entered in the Guinness Book of World Records shortly there-after.

The dress itself weighs 26 pounds. Not to mention what these shoes felt like.

Now if we could only see the rest of this wedding. I can’t imagine.

The French Bridal Trousseau

trous·seau, n. [French, from Old French, diminutive of trousse, bundle. See truss.] The possessions, such as clothing and linens, that a bride assembles for her marriage.

Back in the day, a young woman and her mother would start collecting and sewing items for her trousseau years before she was even engaged! They stored the items in a heavy hand-carved wooden wardrobe or trunk, and when it was complete, the trousseau contained everything that the girl owned- everything that she needed to start her new married life. Trousseaus could contain quilts, china, silverware, pillows or linens, in addition to clothing and lingerie. In Victorian times, it was even a la mode to host a “Trousseau Tea” the day before the wedding, where the brides family would invite people over and show off all of the items in the girls’ trousseau. Today’s trousseau contains gorgeous lingerie, luxurious toiletries, and fabulous going-away outfits, all packed up into beautiful luggage.

If you’d like to go on your own Parisian trousseau shopping spree, your first stop HAS to be the glamorous boudoir of Chantal Thomass at 211 Rue St Honoré. This shop is a paradise of intimate feminine goodies like bras, bustiers, stockings, and dressing gowns as well as froo-froo accessories like pink, lace-up umbrellas, and…black satin and lace hand-cuffs. Oh la laaaa!

Another queen of the intime is Fifi Chachnil. Since 1986, Fifi has been known for her gloriously feminine designs as well as her sense of humor and classic vintage style. Her lingerie is sold worldwide, but nothing beats a trip to one of her Parisian boutiques.

“Though’s in the know” know where to find the most famous French lingerie- they visit Sabbia Rosa at 73, rue des Sts-Pères. This tiny shop lives up to the hype and is a favorite of fashionistas like Madonna, Naomi Campbell and Catherine Deneuve.

One other major element of the modern bridal trousseau is fragrance- for your Parisian trousseau, peek your head into one of the Annick Goutal Boutiques and discover your new “signature scent”. Everything about these boutiques is feminine and flirty- and while you’re there, treat yourself to one of their Boudoir Treatments for the Face or Body (or both!)

If you want to try your hand at creating your own lune de miel fragrance, sign up for an “Atelier du Parfumerie” at the world renowned Guerlain boutique on the Champs Elysees.

Once you have your trousseau together, you can’t just toss it into any old Samsonite! You still have a wedding to pay for, so don’t break the bank on nouveau LV, Hermes or Goyard. Instead, try scouting out Le Monde du Voyage in the Marche aux Puces at St-Ouen. This store has been specializing in vintage luggage for over 20 years, and will surely have the perfect valise to round out your Parisian bridal trousseau.

Everything is better in France! Keeping with our monthly French theme, I thought I would feature an amazing French Designer Max Chaoul.

I do believe I have fallen in love with the marriage between structure and flow in his amazing designs. Absolutely gorgeous!

And here’s some eye candy!

I also absolutely adore the headpieces here. But what I really love is the oversized fabric flowers on the men. It’s stunning and is reminiscent of a later era. Where men wore ruffled shirts and adornments. I would love to see this creep into weddings all over the globe. Tres Magnific!

The day is here again… the day that makes our feet drool. Is that even possible? And if it was possible… anyways.

Since we’re talking about all things French this month it would be totally amiss if I didn’t feature the most amazing French shoe designer, Christian Louboutin.

You know these are the kind of shoes you just dream about. Or you try on in the store and never look at the tag. When the sales person asks you if you would like to purchase them you simply reply. “Oh I’m sorry there just is no more room in my closet from the Fall Collection.”

The Vintage Bride

There is no doubt that wedding couples are incorporating more and more vintage items into their wedding days. Just a quick click around the wedding blogo-shpere and you’re going to find your self immersed in weddings featuring old books, typewriters, trucks, teapots… you name it, it’s out there.

There’s just something about the charm of using a vintage item. It calls back to the days when life was simpler, when beauty was in the quality and not quantity. It gives us a way to connect with our older loved ones and helps us to simplify in a beautiful way!

What I love about incorporating vintage items into weddings is the possibilities are endless. Looking through your grandparents attic could be a great place to start. Looking for inspiration on old wedding albums is a great authentic place to start. Here are some gorgeous examples of vintage inspired weddings. The vintage elements were incorporated seamlessly… and the results are stunning.

Using vintage items during engagement sessions is becoming more and more popular everyday. Suitcases, tables, pianos, all are popular choices. Why not consider using something close to the heart. Are you a writer, a librarian, a chemist… consider the location and the props you’re using like a little hint as to who you are as a couple.

Vendors For Charity- A Night of Nibbling

I recently had the opportunity to attend one of the areas coolest networking events. Here’s the down low from the brilliant mind behind the event, Matt Pine of Lifetime Films.

Couples planning a wedding in Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky (AND DAYTON MATT!!!) are so lucky. In the past couple of years, several hundred wedding specialists: caterers, florists, wedding coordinators, photographers – everyone you might need – have formed an extremely powerful networking web.

About 200 of us got together last Wednesday, July 14, A NIGHT OF NIBBLING: Wedding Vendors for Charity at the amazing Leapin’ Lizards Art Gallery. The event featured 4 of the area’s foremost caterers who vied for “Best of The Evening” title: Eatwell, A La Cart, Bensons, and Creations by Melody.

We all sampled their dishes and voted for our favorites, paying $5 for each ballot. We collected quite a bit of money, of which 100% went to charities designated by the caterers. Donations were made to Lighthouse Youth Services, Cincinnati Parks, USO-Operation Enduring Care, and The Greenacres Foundation Equine Center. The charities benefited, and the vendors had a blast.
As an added bonus my dear friend Tracy Bellman (T-Bell as I know her) of Tres Belle Cakes provided some delectable cupcakes. The incredible Jeff Martin of Le Sucre Bakery entertained us all by deconstructing a traditional wedding cake Jackson Pollack style. It was something to see.

Shoe Appeal Wednesday Retraction!

Holy Holy Holy Smokes! Not long ago I wrote a shoe appeal Wednesday blog featuring these shoes.

While searching online for another totally gorg pair of shoes I stumbled up the designer and consequently the cost of these amazing shoes.

I found them Bergdorf Goodman. The shoe is designed by Valentino and GULP… cost $4,700.

Now, I was absolutely shocked when I saw the price tag but after the chin came up from the ground I just had to laugh. Here’s why…

When I first married my amazing husband he told me to start looking at cars on the road to see if I could pick out one that I liked. Now if you knew me at all you would know I know absolutely NOTHING about cars… I might remember the color…. Might! I have no clue which symbol goes with what brand or better yet what that symbols mean when it comes to cost efficiency or value.

So one day I come home and I tell him I found the car I love. I began to describe the features of the vehicle… much like you would a gorgeous being… the hips were curvy, the eyes were thin… etc. When all of the sudden my wonderful husband asks me, “By any chance was there a tiger sticking out of the front.” I responded quickly… “Yeah, I think so.”

His reply I will never forget… “Kellie, that was a Jaguar. Of all the cars in the world you picked a JAG? Nice!”

I had picked this:

Since then… every time I see this car I point it out… not knowing that I’m pointing out the same car over and over again. Somehow I have been blessed with extremely expensive taste.

You can send me into a boutique asking me only to choose my favorite item and I can guarantee you I will choose the most expensive item in the store.

With that said…. I do not recommend you purchase these amazing Valentino shoes. Well unless you plan on wearing every one of the 5 inches of heel everyday for the rest of your life!!!!

10 inexpensive ways to have an earth friendly wedding!

Number 10: Donate to the community.
Reduce waste by donating leftover food to homeless shelters and/or food banks in your community. Speak with your caterer about how best this can be done and contact your local shelters for advice. Visit America's Second Harvest to search over 200 community food banks.

Number 9: Rethink your invitations.
Choose or create a postcard for your reply card as part of your invitations and leave out the outer envelope You're Invited offers a number of handmade envelopes, as well as custom and pre-made invitations with postcard replies.

Number 8: Settle on a City.
Have your wedding in the city where most of your guests reside. This cuts down on the amount of air or car travel, therefor reducing the amount of carbon released in the air. You can also encourage guests to take public transportation or carpool.

Number 7: Greening your Registry.
Create an earth friendly registry. Websites like Mamas Earth, Eco Wise, Ten Thousand Villages , all offer earth friendly registries. A few more places to check out are: Biome, World Wildlife Fund, and Earth Friendly Goods.

Number 6: Seedy Favors.
Give an earth friendly wedding favor. Try organic chocolates, natural honey, soy candles, or wildflower seeds as wedding favors. Plant A Memory offers $1 and $2 favors. Number 5: Thrifty Fruit Centerpiece.
Create an eclectic look by shopping the thrift stores for different kinds of vases and filling them with local organic fruits for your centerpieces. Guests can take the fruits home afterward or donate them to the shelters as well.

Number 4: Something old, Something new, Something USED!
Purchase a used or vintage wedding dress. Reusing items is one of the most earth friendly thing you can do. You may even be able to get a designer wedding dress for half the original cost! And for something that was probably only worn once, that ain't bad! Check out usedweddingdressses.com or check around your town to see if any stores sell used dresses.

Number 3: Give up the cameras, not the pictures!
One popular idea is to provide disposable cameras on each table. Instead, ask guests to bring their own digital cameras (almost everyone has them now). You can then set up a community album on flickr or photobucket, which guests can use to upload their photos too.

Number 2: Burn Baby Burn!

Number 1:
Elope! Skip the favors, the flowers, the menu, the entertainment, etc... Of course, that's not a plausible number one for most of us and if it were, I probably wouldn't be writing in this little blog, so I'll provide an alternative number 1.

ALTERNATIVE Number 1: Spread the word!
This is your wedding. It's a celebration between and for two people who love each other and the principles and values that bind them. Take the opportunity to share with your guests those values. Show them how you made your wedding earth friendly and you just might inspire a few of your guests to throw their cans into the recycle bin next time, to search for the organic certified label when they buy fruit, or maybe even start taking the bus to work.

The truth is there are so many different and smart ways one can be considerate of the environment while planning their wedding.

Remember the 3R’s

Reduce: Sometimes bigger isn’t always better. Pairing down can lead to beautiful and simple wedding decor. Don’t be persuaded by the over the top designs outs there.

Re-use: This is where the word up-cycle comes into play. Dig through old clothes to see what you can take apart and re-use for fabric elements. Look around your house to see what you might already own that can be incorporated in your wedding day.

Recycle: Consider asking guests and catering companies to sort trash away from recyclable items. Even setting a receptacle out for bottles and cans makes a difference. Consider donating left over decor to nursing homes or local charities. Have the caterers gather left over food to donate or be used for a picnic the following day.

DIY Satin Flowers

I have always loved the look of these flowers and knew I could totally recreate them. So today I took a trip to the fabric store to pick up the supplies I needed to make them. Here are the supplies you'll need.

Supplies:

Yardage of Satin Material (if you're only making 1 large flower 1/4 of a yard is more than sufficient.)
Yardage of corresponding Organza Material
Thread in corresponding colors
Needles
Glass Beads in corresponding colors
Scissors
Long necked lighter

Wine glass

Votive cup

Colored Pencil or Sharpie

Bottle of Wine for sipping as you craft!

Where to Begin:

Lay fabric upside down on your crafting surface. The silkiest side of the fabric should be face down.

Use the dimensions of a wine glass to trace a circle shape on the back of the fabric.

Trace several circles to make numerous flowers.

Cut the circles out with a pair of regular scissors.

Use a votive holder to make smaller circles and repeat the cutting process. Don’t worry about making the circles perfect.

Cut one large and one small circle about 1/4” smaller than the others.

You will end up with 4 circles this like this:

Begin the heat setting process by squeezing the largest circle together in your fingers.

Use your long necked lighter to slowly heat set the edges of the circle. The heat will cause the sides to curl and warp.

Continue the heat setting process with all of the circles.

Once all of the circles are completed, thread your needle with a corresponding thread. You’ll only need about 12 inches of thread doubled over. Knot the thread at the bottom.

Layer the smallest circle on top of the next largest circle.

Thread the needle up through the bottom of the two layered circles.

Before threading back down pick up a bead with your needle.

Thread back down into the center of the flower with your needle. Repeat as many times as you’d like based on the number of beads you’d like in the center of the flower. For these flowers I used 3 beads.

Once the beads are attached. Layer the remaining two circles with the largest on the outside. Use the same thread to attach these two layers to the inside section of the flower.

Gather the flower by creating an exaggerated X on the backside of the flower. When you pull the loose X in to tie it off it will gather and bunch the flower to create a beautiful bloom.

Use the blooms to attach to a hair pin, a belted sash, a necklace, or fashion a bouquet with these beautiful blooms.

A Few Added Tips:

For the white flower I also used a sheer organza fabric to create the beautiful airy look. Heat set the organza just like the satin. But be careful because the organza will brown much faster.

Using larger circles will create larger blooms but you’ll need more varied size layers in between to create a full look.

It does happen on occasion that heat setting can cause the fabric to catch on fire. In that case, quickly blow it out. Trim the dark edge off and start again.

If after you’ve assembled the flower there’s a little fraying… slowly, and carefully re-heat set.

Keep your eyes open for the DIY tips on turning these beauties into a bouquet!

Shoe Appeal

So for those of you who don't know already, I'm a huge shoe fanatic. My dad loves to tell the story about picking me up from college in Minneapolis, MN and hauling my 3 enormous tubs of almost 200 pairs of shoes all the way home to NY.

I caught the shoe bug young... and although I have paired down as an adult I still have almost 100 shoes! So yeah... loving shoes comes naturally! A Twist On The Toss!

Tossing the wedding garter is an old time held tradition. It is said that in the days gone past, the bride and groom had to show proof of their wedding consummation. In order for it to be proven, it was common tradition to have people like family and friends come into the room with the couple. The "witnesses" would obtain the garter as "proof" of the consummation. Also having any article of the under garments was considered to be good luck so sometimes things would get out of hand in the newly wed's bedroom as crazed onlookers snatched at clothing to get for good luck. This was not appreciated much by the bride nor many grooms, hence the groom started tossing the garter out so that no one would need to obtain it themselves.

(How barbaric this sounds! glad things have changed since then)

Because of modesty, this tradition has been modified and moved from the bedroom to the reception. Now today we have the traditional garter toss, which is meant to bring good luck to the man who catches it. He is said to be the next one to marry. In some cultures the men stand and wait for the garter to be tossed. Other cultures they actually compete for it. The men may compete for the garter in a foot race or by horse (this is a medieval practice). At least it is better than having the men chase the bride and put her upside down to get the garter off... This is what used to happen! In yet other places, they even auction the garter off. As strange as these twists on the wedding garter tradition may sound, it's all just a tradition. Take it or leave it.

Education is Key

Today we spent the day at Receptions Banquet Facility in Fairfield, OH taking in a seminar hosted by Perfect Wedding Guide called The Wedding Institute.

Cecilia Rose of Eventurous taught the first session about Raving Fans. You know when you've had an experience so amazing you just can't NOT tell someone about it. Have you been a raving fan? It made me think about one of our anniversary trips to the Weller Haus Bed and Breakfast in KY. We had such a wonderful time that we left there telling everyone they absolutely must go there... we were RAVING FANS. It then made me think too about the clients father I had that after a particularly hard last week before the wedding got up during the reception and thanked me personally in front of all of the guests and made me stand for an applause. I was mortified and hoped that would never happen again... but I had created a raving fan.

She challenged me to work towards creating a customer service experience for my clients that is amazing everytime. This can only be achieved through knowing myself and who my clients are. I'm working towards finding this balance and the poor notebook is going to be on fire from all of my note taking and plans for the future.

The Second session was taught by Gene from LGH Designs and/or Details and Designs in Indianapolis, IN. He was just a fun guy but super knowledgable when it comes to event design. He has been in the business for a long time and has built some wonderful contacts and partnerships. His session was intended to teach us how to maximize profit... but I gleaned something totally different.

He inspired me to look into partnerning with businesses to provide services to clients. I have been interested all along in branching into floral design... but knew I would need a ton more education and was really unsure about stocking and cooling etc. We'll be spending the next little bit looking to form a partnership with a florist where hand in hand can provide the florals through another company. This way my design ideas can come through!

It's an Etsy Fest!

So this morning I got this crazy idea! Wonder if I could create a whole wedding right from etsy? Dress and all? Well here it is!

I started by searching for the gown. I was surprised to find that there are really beautiful newly made gowns there along with artisans who will create the gown of your dreams. I however fell in love with this gorgeous 1920's gown. It's vintage appeal is what set the tone for the other elements. The vintage lace bridesmaid dresses is also from the 1920's and was what set the tone for the color choices.

I just love this old world feel. I imagine the use of flower pots and vintage stamps on the invitations. Old glass pieces with a touch of feathers. I even imagine the flower girl using a vintage hat turned upside down to be used for a basket while the little boy carries the rings tied onto a vintage book strap.

If you haven't been to www.etsy.com you absolutely must go quickly and waste hours and hours of time becoming inspired and awed by the amazingly talented artists and the unique items you might find there. Happy Etsying all!

Dollars Schmollars! Weddings don't have to break the bank!

For a while now I have been involved in a wonderful chatting community of brides and occasional grooms. It's always so awesome to hear their ideas and plans for their weddings. I love watching a bride come in to the forum in the beginning of the planning stages and share with us her wedding plans as they unfold.

Most are DIY brides trying to be sure their hard earned dollars stretch as far as they can. There's always wonderful advice given and some of them are google geniuses. They work together to help each other create wonderful weddings that are totally unique. They share their favorite DIY projects. Or their latest inpsirations. Many come back after their wedding to share pictures of the projects the've spent so much time creating.

I'd like to share with you some of my favorites.

Here is a great idea for activities to do at your reception. Especially if you're not planning on dancing or serving alcohol.

A DIY photo booth with picture frames we all expect but when you add cute chalkboards or better yet letter magnets you can have a world of fun and a very interesting scrapbook of wedding guests well wishes.

Or how about a fun board where guest can write their names on tags and pinpoint the year they met you. Such a simple but super fun idea for cocktail hour especially.

The next picture is a table runner. One of these amazing brides is marrying a screen printer! Sounds like a talent to use and abuse!! So she saw these amazingly cool table runners after learning she scored old woood tables at her venue! What a great DIY plan!

Remember when planning a wedding the possibilities are endless. I like to pretend it's like taking all of your favorite sights, sounds, smells, tastes, feelings, people, and moments all crammed into one event. I mean how could it not be a success.

It's not about the money.... it's about the time taken to create an event that represents you and your love.

That is what this community of girls is all about. And I'm so glad to be a part of them. And I'm so glad they let me give advice and tid-bits of imformation. It's a wonderful part of my day. Thanks CL girls!

Hand them to vendors you meet with. Use them at a bridal show so you don't have to spend hours filling out your name and address. Drop them in the drawing box with ease!

Give them to family members that just HAVE to be in the know! Or share them with your wedding party to slide into their purse so they can reach you whenever they might have a question.

What a great way to subtly introduce the color scheme or theme of your wedding. Infuse the design with your monogram or even your engagement pictures!

As I work on this blog I want to be intentional in putting out there the plans for moving ahead for the coming year. This way the world knows it and I'm accountable for it!!

A few more of the steps in the next year are going to be a total revamp of our website. We are looking into software that will allow us to manage and operate the website ourselves so we can have regular updates and post pictures quickly after new events. If you have recommendations for a program that would be great to use feel free to leave a comment.

Next, we are looking into floral design classes and are in touch with the Floral Design Institute in Portland, Oregon. The option to design and create my own floral work would greatly increase the business and separate Hand in Hand. Doing flowers has always been something I've loved and had a knack for. Now whilst learning the mechanisms behind the art I can create some of the new and fascinating ideas I have swirling around in my head! I haven't spoken with wholesalers yet but I'm also hoping that I will be able to pass on some of my savings to my clients through these services.

We are also looking for ideas for places to volunteer our event planning services for the 2010 year. If you know of an organization or corporation looking for this kind of help please leave me a comment.

This year will definitely be a huge venture. But we are looking forward to the endless possibilities that some of these changes will make to the foundations of Hand in Hand.

Hello Big World!

We're just getting our toes wet! It's our very first blog ever! We'll keep it brief and share just a bit about the upcoming year of plans for Hand in Hand Events.

Well, first of all we've semi-changed our name! We've always been called Hand in Hand Bridal. While wedding planning is a huge part of our company we have spent the last year branching out into other events. Thus the new business name. Hand in Hand Event Planning Services!!!

In the next year we are working on creating a network of wedding vendors that live and work right here in my town of Springboro. There's quiet a good number of us and I would love to get us all together to share knowledge and wisdom in regards to the industry.

We are also in the process of launching an educational and fun event called "Night With The Pros". Brides will be able to join us for a night of wedding planning tips and tricks, face to face time with experts in the local wedding market, and a step by step DIY instructional time. Everyone goes away smarter, savvier and with tons of great inspirations. Keep your eyes/ears open for more news and dates!
